The poster went up six weeks before, and it had his name on it, and that is where all of this starts.
He did not design the poster. He would not have put it that way himself. But the room that gathers on a Friday night has read that poster, and some of them have driven a long way on the strength of it, and one family has come from two counties over with three children in the back of a car.
He knows that because the host told him, warmly, in the kitchen, over a mug of tea, about ten minutes before he was due to speak. The host meant it as encouragement.
So there is a thing that happens in him now, at about six o'clock on a Friday, and he is ashamed of it and it happens anyway. He starts to plan. Not the talk, which is prepared and honest. He starts to plan the evening: where it ought to build, what he will do if it is flat by nine, which of the two endings he will use, which one has worked before.
And he can feel, quite precisely, the difference between preparing to serve a room and preparing to make sure a room is not disappointed. He knows which one he is doing. He has known for about two years.
If your arrival has become a promise, come and sit in the kitchen. Nothing about that host, or those posters, or one person who drove is going to be criticized here.
He has taken responsibility for an outcome
Let us name the thing he has quietly picked up, because it is not preparation and it is not diligence.
He has accepted responsibility for what happens in that room. Not for his own faithfulness in it, which is his, and not for telling the truth carefully, which is his. For the outcome. For whether a family with three children in the back of a car goes home glad.
That was never his and he could not deliver it if he tried, and the moment a man accepts it he begins, necessarily, to manage. Managing is not wickedness. It is what any responsible person does with a thing they believe is theirs to secure. But it turns a servant into a producer, and it does it slowly enough that nobody notices for about two years.
You are not the one who delivers that evening. Nothing anybody drove two hours for has ever been yours to guarantee. I am not saying it to lower the standard of anybody's preparation. Scripture says I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling (1 Corinthians 2:3), which is a man describing his own arrival at a place he had been sent to, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a man at six o'clock on a Friday.
The state Paul reports on arrival
Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off anybody who invites anybody.
Read what Paul volunteers about his own condition when he got there, because nobody made him say it.
And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.1 Corinthians 2:3
Weakness, fear, much trembling. That is the man arriving. He is not reporting a failure and he is not apologizing; he is telling them what he was like, and then he tells them what the evening ran on.
And notice where the word demonstration lands. It is not attached to him. It is a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, and the sentence is built so that the one and the other cannot be confused: no enticing words, because the effect was never supposed to be traceable to the speaker.
You may arrive weak and let the demonstration belong to Him, and Scripture puts that word on the Spirit rather than on the man. That is written into the passage itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a man in a kitchen with a mug going cold.
Nothing here is against the invitation
Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page that undercuts every host who ever printed a poster.
The host was encouraging him, not loading him. Telling a speaker that a family drove two counties is what a warm person says, and it is meant as gladness rather than as a bill. The posters are not vanity. Somebody has to tell people when a thing is on.
And the people who drove are not consumers. They came hungry, which is right, and hunger is not a fault in a congregation, and nothing on this page says a word against the way that room worships once it starts.
What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where it is given across the room rather than carried in by the visitor, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not the man whose name is on the poster, who decides what a Friday holds.
And if these two years have cost more than the friends in that kitchen know, if sleep has gone, if six o'clock on a Friday has started to frighten you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people, and a man on a poster is not exempt from needing it.
So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about how Friday night goes.
What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says the demonstration is of the Spirit and of power rather than of a man's enticing words (1 Corinthians 2:3), and it is the Holy Spirit, not the plan you make at six o'clock, who is responsible for what happens in a hall.
I cannot tell you what God does on Friday, or whether the family with three children goes home glad. Nobody honest would, and a man who promises that has taken something that is not his. What I can tell you is that the man who wrote about weakness and trembling was not underprepared, and that the outcome was never on the invitation.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.
- Weight of a room that drove two hours, you are a hope I did not create and you are not an outcome God assigned to me. First Corinthians 2 has a man arrive in weakness and fear and much trembling and put the demonstration on the Spirit rather than on himself, and the Holy Spirit has never once made me the guarantor. In the name of Jesus I put you down.
- Six o'clock planning of how the evening ought to build, you are not what God says about me and you are not standing in that kitchen on Friday. First Corinthians 12 gives the manifestation across the room rather than carrying it in with the visitor, so nothing was ever imported in my bag, and His Spirit decides what a Friday holds. I have nothing to prove in that room.
- Father, the demonstration is of the Spirit and of power and never of enticing words, and First Corinthians 2 is built so the two cannot be confused. I thank You for a host who meant every word as gladness and for a family who drove two counties hungry. What He gave me is not a demonstration.
