Nothing To DemonstrateLuke 2:19

I Am The One Who Puts It Into Words

This message is for I am the one who can say what just happened, so everybody comes to me afterward, and I have not had an unexplained experience of my own in about six years

She is the one people come to afterward, and it takes about four minutes for the first of them to reach her.

She can do it. That is the trouble. Somebody who cannot say what happened to them says three broken sentences at her and she hands back one clean one, and they look relieved, and they say that is exactly it, and they go home with something they can carry.

It is a genuine gift and she knows it and she has never once used it to make herself look clever.

But here is what has happened underneath. Because she is the one who translates, she has learned to translate while it is still going on. She listens to a room with half her attention on what she will say about it later. Her own experiences arrive pre packaged, in sentences, already fit for somebody else's use, and she cannot remember the last time she had one that was simply hers and unspoken.

Six years, near enough. Six years without a single thing kept.

And the thought that arrives at about eleven at night is that she may have become a woman who processes God rather than a woman who meets Him.

If you are the one who puts it into words, come and sit in the shade. Nobody who ever came to you afterward is going to be criticized here.

I Am The One Who Puts It Into Words

Translating in real time costs the original

Let us be precise about the mechanism, because the gift is not the problem and the timing is.

Language is how a thing gets carried to somebody else, and that is good, and rooms need people who can do it. But translation requires distance. To put a thing into words while it is happening, a person has to step back from it far enough to look at it, and the stepping back is the cost.

She has been standing at that distance for six years without going back in. Nobody asked her to. It is simply what happens when a person is very good at a service and the service is always needed.

You are not a machine for processing what God does. Nothing about being able to say it has ever required you to say it. I am not saying it to take a gift off a woman. Scripture says but Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart (Luke 2:19), which is a description of somebody with more reason than most to speak and choosing not to yet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in a woman at eleven at night.

The one who had the most to say and kept it

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off a single person who has come to you.

Read what she does in the middle of the loudest room in the account, because everybody else in that chapter is talking.

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.Luke 2:19

Kept. That is a verb of holding, and it is set deliberately against the verse before it, where the shepherds are making it known abroad and everybody who hears it is wondering out loud.

She had more material than anybody present. She could have explained the whole thing to that room and been believed. And the account records, without a hint of criticism, that she held it and worked it over privately instead.

You may keep a thing and turn it over privately, and Scripture records that as what the person nearest the center did. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a woman four minutes after a meeting ends.

Nobody who comes to you is being blamed

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a complaint about people who only ever wanted help.

They are not draining her. Somebody who cannot say what happened to them is genuinely stuck, and being handed one clean sentence is a real mercy, and the relief on their faces is not manipulation. What she does for them matters, and this page is not asking her to stop doing it.

And nothing here is against anybody in that room who is loud, or expressive, or who talks about everything immediately. The shepherds in that chapter made it known abroad and are not corrected for it. Making it known and keeping it are both in the same passage, and neither is ranked.

What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where the profit of others is the aim and the constant production of language is not the method, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not the woman who can always find the sentence, who carries what a room understands.

And if these six years have cost more than the friends at that table know, if sleep has gone, if eleven at night has become the worst hour of the day, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about what happens the next time you are in that room.

What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart (Luke 2:19), where the one with the most to say holds it instead, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a woman standing at translating distance, who makes a thing land in anybody.

I cannot tell you what God gives you next, or whether you will find any words for it. Nobody honest would. What I can tell you is that six years of translating has not made you a processor, and that you are allowed one experience that never becomes a sentence for anybody.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Habit of converting everything into language, you are a service I provide and you are not the way God requires me to receive. Luke 2 says Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart, and the one with the most to say is recorded holding it without a word of criticism, and the Holy Spirit never once asked me for a sentence first. In the name of Jesus I put you down.
  2. Fear that I process God rather than meet Him, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting at this table tonight. First Corinthians 12 aims the giving at the profit of others rather than at constant translation, so the method was never mine to keep up, and His Spirit makes a thing land in people. I have nothing to prove in that room.
  3. Father, she kept all these things and pondered them in her heart, and Luke 2 sets that beside the shepherds making it known abroad and ranks neither. I thank You for every person who has come to me stuck and gone home carrying something, and Your Spirit did the work and never once needed me to. What He gave me is not a demonstration.
