I Compare Myself To A Stranger Every Night

This message is for there is a woman I have never met whose life I watch on a screen most evenings, and I measure my own against hers, and I have done it nearly every night for a year

She could tell you what that woman had for breakfast on Tuesday, and they have never met, and they never will.

It started as encouragement. That is the honest beginning of it. She found somebody whose life looked like the one she thought she was supposed to be building, and watching it felt, for about a month, like being shown that such a life exists.

Fourteen months later it is the last thing she does before she sleeps, most nights, and it has stopped being encouragement and become measurement.

The measurement is always in one direction. That woman's day is edited and hers is not, and she knows that, and knowing it has never once made a difference at eleven at night. She is comparing her whole interior, including the parts nobody would ever film, with a stranger's exterior, including only the parts worth filming.

And the verdict comes in every night, and it is the same verdict, and she has begun to arrange her actual life around trying to overturn it.

If you are measuring yours against somebody you have never met, come and walk a bit. Nobody on any screen is going to be criticized here.

I Compare Myself To A Stranger Every Night

The instrument is broken, not the life

Let us be precise about the mechanism, because she keeps treating the result as information about herself.

She is holding two things side by side that are not the same kind of thing. One is her own life from inside, which includes every doubt, every dull Tuesday, every unfinished thing, and every hour nobody would ever record. The other is a selection, made by somebody else, of the moments in their life that were worth showing.

No life survives that comparison. Not the stranger's own, if she were to hold her interior against her own edit. The result is not a finding about the woman doing the measuring. It is what that instrument outputs whoever stands in front of it.

You are not behind. Nothing produced by measuring your inside against somebody's outside has ever been information about you. I am not saying it to talk a woman out of a habit. Scripture says they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise (2 Corinthians 10:12), which names the practice and calls it unwise rather than wicked, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in a woman at eleven at night.

Named, and called unwise rather than wicked

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off the woman on that screen.

Read the word Paul chooses, because a harsher one was available and he did not use it.

For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.2 Corinthians 10:12

Are not wise. Not are wicked, not are faithless, not are in rebellion. He treats comparison as a category error, the way you would treat a man weighing something with a ruler.

That matters enormously for a woman who has spent fourteen months adding guilt about the habit on top of the verdict the habit produces. The book does not require her to repent of an instrument. It tells her the instrument does not measure.

You are holding a broken instrument rather than a sin you must clear, and Scripture calls the practice unwise on purpose. That is written into the word itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a woman on a lane in the evening.

Nobody on that screen is being judged

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page that makes a stranger the villain of somebody else's evenings.

That woman has done nothing to her. Showing the good parts of a life is not deceit, it is what a person does with a camera, and everybody who has ever taken a photograph has chosen a moment. She may be carrying things that would break your heart if you knew, and it is not for anybody here to guess.

And nothing on this page says a public life is a shallow one. Some of what she watches is real and good, and it was not built to be a ruler and cannot help being used as one.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where the giving is not indexed against anybody else's, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a comparison run nightly for fourteen months, who says what a life is.

And if this year has cost more than the friends on that lane know, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about your own reach or a rule about your phone.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says those measuring themselves by themselves are not wise (2 Corinthians 10:12), where the practice is named as a category error rather than a crime, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a nightly verdict from a broken instrument, who says what your life amounts to.

I cannot tell you what God does with what you carry, or how far it goes. Nobody honest would. What I can tell you is that a year of that measurement has produced no information about you at all, and that it was never going to, whoever had been standing in front of it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Woman on a screen I have never met, you are somebody else's outside and you are not the ruler God measures me with. Second Corinthians 10 says those measuring themselves by themselves are not wise, which names it as a category error rather than a crime, and the Holy Spirit has never once weighed me against a stranger. In the name of Jesus I put the instrument down.
  2. Verdict that arrives every night at eleven, you are not what God says about me and you are not walking this lane with me tomorrow. First Corinthians 12 does not index the giving against anybody else's, so no life was ever a ruler for another, and His Spirit says what mine amounts to. I do not need a platform for this to be real.
  3. Father, they measuring themselves by themselves are not wise, and Second Corinthians 10 chose the gentler word when a harder one was available. I thank You that the woman I have watched has done nothing to me and may be carrying things that would break my heart, and Your Spirit was in the van and the kitchen and the corridor. It was given to me, not to an audience.
