The Record I Keep Is A Portfolio

This message is for I have kept a private notebook of names and dates and what happened for seven years, nobody has seen it, and I have realized that what I am keeping is a portfolio

Seven years of a hardbacked notebook in a drawer, and about four hundred entries, and until March he would have told you it was a discipline.

The entries are short. A name, a date, three or four lines about what happened and what he thought was going on. He started it because he did not trust his own memory and did not want to smooth things afterward into a better shape than they had been.

That was true. It is still partly true.

What happened in March is that he was reaching for something else in the drawer, and he saw it, and a sentence arrived in him fully formed and unwelcome: if somebody ever asks me whether any of this is real, that book is what I would hand them.

He has not been able to put that down since. Because if that is what it is for, then it has been, for some part of seven years, a portfolio. A body of evidence, kept in a drawer, in case of an audit by a party who has never once shown any sign of coming.

And every entry since March has felt contaminated. He keeps writing them. He cannot tell whether he is recording or filing.

If you found a second purpose inside something you kept privately, come and sit at the table. That notebook of yours is not going to be criticized here.

The Record I Keep Is A Portfolio

Two purposes in one book is not a scandal

Let us look at what he actually discovered, because he has treated it as an unmasking and it is not.

He found a second purpose living alongside the first. That is not the discovery that the first was false. A man can keep a record because he distrusts his memory and also, in the same drawer, quietly like the fact that it would answer somebody one day. Those coexist without one of them being a disguise for the other.

And there is a heavier thing underneath. Since March he has been trying to be the judge of his own inner state, which is a role that produces no verdict however long it is worked, and he has spent five months producing none.

You have not been running a fraud. Nothing about a second purpose living beside the first has ever made the first one a lie. I am not saying it to spare a careful man a hard look. Scripture says judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5), which removes a specific job from a person's hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a man standing at an open drawer.

The job is explicitly removed

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off any record anybody keeps.

Read who is disqualified from this particular assessment, because it includes the person themselves.

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts.1 Corinthians 4:5

The counsels of the hearts. That is exactly the material he has been trying to adjudicate since March: what a thing was really for, underneath, at the bottom.

And the verse says that work is timed and assigned. It happens then, and it is done by Him. Paul says in the same passage that he does not even judge himself, which is not modesty. It is a man declining a role he is not equipped for and knows it.

You may decline the job of judging your own heart, and Scripture assigns it explicitly to Him and to a later time. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a man five months into an inquiry.

Nothing here says stop keeping the record

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page telling a careful man that carefulness was the problem.

Keeping a record is not vanity. Memory does smooth things, and a man who wants to know what actually happened rather than what he prefers to remember is doing something honest that most people never bother with. Nobody is being told to burn a notebook here.

And nothing here says that having evidence is shameful. Plenty of people are called to say what happened, publicly, and a man who could give an account if he were asked is not thereby a man performing for an audience that has not arrived.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where the profit is of people rather than the establishment of a case, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not four hundred entries in a drawer, who holds what happened.

And if these five months have cost more than the friends at that table know, if sleep has gone, if the drawer has started to frighten you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about what you find in yourself next.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will make manifest the counsels of the hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5), where the assessment of motive is timed and assigned away from you, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a man conducting five months of an inquiry into himself, who knows what a record was for.

I cannot tell you what those four hundred entries were, at the bottom, and I would not trust anybody who claimed to. What I can tell you is that Paul declined to judge even himself, and that a job which produces no verdict after five months is very often a job that was never yours.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Notebook nobody has ever seen, you are a record I keep and you are not the account God is keeping. First Corinthians 4 says judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes and makes manifest the counsels of the hearts, so that assessment is timed and assigned away from me, and the Holy Spirit has held all seven years of it. In the name of Jesus I hand you over.
  2. Five month inquiry into my own motives, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting at this table tomorrow. First Corinthians 12 aims the profit at people rather than at building a case, so nothing in that drawer was ever the point, and His Spirit holds what happened. I do not need a platform for this to be real.
  3. Father, the hidden things are brought to light by You and the counsels of the hearts are made manifest by You, and First Corinthians 4 has Paul say in that same passage that he does not judge even himself. I thank You for four hundred entries written by a man who wanted the truth rather than the better version, and Your Spirit was in the van and the kitchen and the corridor. It was given to me, not to an audience.
