The Meal With No Photograph

This message is for I took a covered dish to one recovering neighbor and found myself wanting a photograph of it, and the wanting has troubled me more than anything I have done in a year

It was a covered dish and a bag with bread in it, and the whole thing took about four minutes at a door on a Tuesday.

Her neighbor is three weeks out of hospital and lives alone, and there was nothing complicated about any of it. She cooked more than she needed, she walked two hundred yards, she handed it over, she said she would come back Friday, and she went home.

And somewhere between the door and her own gate, a thought arrived that she has not been able to shake since.

She wanted a picture of it.

Not to post, exactly. She could not even say what she wanted it for. Just some record that the four minutes had occurred, held somewhere outside her own head.

It is nine days later and that is what she is thinking about, rather than the neighbor, who is doing well. She has decided the wanting means something bad about her, and the deciding has done more damage than the wanting ever did.

If you caught yourself wanting a record, come in and lean on the door frame. Nobody who has ever posted anything is going to be criticized here.

The Meal With No Photograph

The wanting is ordinary and it is not the sin she named

Let us be accurate about what she caught, because she has filed it under vanity and it does not belong there.

Vanity wants an audience. Test it against what actually happened: she did not want anybody to see it, and if a neighbor had walked past and made a remark she would have wanted the ground to open.

What she wanted was for the thing to be recorded. That is a different want, and it is one of the oldest human ones, and it is why people keep receipts and write dates in the back of books and carve names into gate posts.

You did not spoil it. Nothing about wanting a moment recorded has ever undone the four minutes it happened in. I am not saying it to excuse a want. Scripture says let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth (Matthew 6:3), which is an instruction about the doing rather than a verdict on the wanting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in a woman nine days later.

An instruction about the hands, not the heart's audit

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off anybody who has ever posted anything.

Read the shape of that sentence, because it is an instruction and it is deliberately physical.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.Matthew 6:3

Let not thy left hand know. It is about hands, and it is about the doing, and it is almost comically concrete: keep it that quiet, keep it that unremarked, keep it beneath even your own accounting.

And notice what it does not say. It does not say search yourself for the wish to be seen and disqualify yourself if you find one. It gives a person something to do rather than something to detect.

You are given an action rather than an inspection, and Scripture puts the instruction on the hands. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a woman on a path two hundred yards from a door.

Nobody who posts is being blamed

Something must be said plainly, or this becomes a page sneering at people whose kindness happens to be visible.

The visible ones are not compromised. A photograph has got people fed who would not otherwise have been fed, an appeal with a picture on it has filled more than one freezer in that street, and a person who tells other people what a neighbor needs is doing something useful that quiet people do not do.

And the next verse in that chapter is not a threat. Thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly is an assurance, not a warning.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly (Matthew 6:4), where the seeing is already happening in the place nobody else can look, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a photograph, who holds the record of a Tuesday.

And if these nine days have cost more than the friends at that door know, if sleep has gone, if the thought has begun to trouble you badly, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about what your neighbor does or says.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth (Matthew 6:3), which hands a person an action rather than an inspection, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a photograph you did not take, who holds what happened at that door.

I cannot tell you what God does with four minutes on a Tuesday. Nobody honest would, and the next verse says the accounting is His anyway. What I can tell you is that you have spent nine days prosecuting a want that was never vanity, and that the neighbor is doing well and it is partly because you cooked more than you needed.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Wish for a picture of that doorstep, you are an ordinary want and you are not a stain on what I carried up the path. Matthew 6 says let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth, which hands me an action rather than an inspection, and the Holy Spirit never once asked me to search myself before I was allowed to cook. In the name of Jesus I stop calling you vanity.
  2. Nine days of prosecuting myself, you are not what God says about me and you are not walking up that path on Friday. Matthew 6 says the Father who sees in secret is already seeing, so the record was being kept before I wanted one, and His Spirit holds what happened at that door. I do not need a platform for this to be real.
  3. Father, Matthew 6 says You see in secret, and You have never once needed a photograph of anything. I thank You for the people whose kindness is visible and who have filled freezers in this street by saying out loud what a neighbor needed, and Your Spirit kept the record while nobody was looking. It was given to me, not to an audience.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
