I Registered The Domain Name At Two In The Morning

It renews on the eleventh of March, and every year the email arrives, and every year she pays it.

She bought it at about two in the morning, eighteen months ago, in the state a person is in at two in the morning. It is a good name. It took her forty minutes to land on it, and she felt, at the time, something close to relief, as though a shapeless thing had been given an outline at last.

There is nothing behind it. No site, no page, no plan, nothing written. Just a name she owns and a small annual charge and, once a year, a reminder in her inbox that she is a woman with a name and no thing.

And here is what she has never told anybody. The embarrassment about the domain has grown larger than what she actually carries. She now thinks about that name more often than she thinks about the thing it was supposed to be for. What God did in her is real, and she has quietly filed it under unfinished business, because there is an empty address on the internet that says so.

If you have half started something you never really wanted, sit down and have breakfast. Nobody who has actually built anything is going to be criticized here.

The name was never the assignment

Let us look at what happened at two in the morning, because it was not a calling and it was not a failure either.

What she had was something real and shapeless. What she wanted, understandably, was for it to have an outline, because a shapeless thing is hard to hold and impossible to describe to anybody who asks. And in the world she lives in, the outline available at two in the morning is a brand.

So she reached for the nearest container. That is not vanity. It is a person trying to make something holdable.

But the container came with a verdict attached, which she never agreed to: that a real thing produces a visible thing, and until the visible thing exists the real one is pending.

You are not carrying unfinished business. Nothing about an empty address on the internet has ever made what God did in you provisional. I am not saying it to let a woman off a call. Scripture says study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands (1 Thessalonians 4:11), which is an instruction rather than a concession, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a woman on the eleventh of March.

The quiet life is commanded, not permitted

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off one person who has built something.

Read the verb attached to being quiet, because it is not the verb anybody expects.

And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.1 Thessalonians 4:11

Study. That is effort, applied deliberately, toward an unremarkable life. And then, at the end of the sentence, as we commanded you, which puts it in the same category as anything else the letter tells them to do.

It is not the fallback for people whose ministry did not take off. It is a thing to be pursued on purpose, by people with something real in them, as an instruction.

You may pursue an unremarkable life on purpose, and Scripture attaches the word commanded to it. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a woman with a renewal email open.

Nothing here is against anybody who built something

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page that sneers at everybody with a website.

The people who built things are not compromised. Some of them were told to, some of them were needed, and a great many people have been fed by work that had to have a name and an address in order to reach them. A public ministry is not a private one that went wrong.

The trouble was never that a container exists. It is that she reached for one at two in the morning to answer a question nobody had asked her.

You do not need a platform for this to be real. It was given to you, not to an audience. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where the profit is of people rather than of a project, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a name she owns, who decides what a thing becomes.

And if this has cost more than the friends at that table know, if sleep has gone, if the eleventh of March has become a bad day, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
