He sits about six rows back, and he also sits about six rows back inside his own head, and the second one is the problem.
He was trained. Years of it, and it was good training, and it taught him to notice: what a text is actually doing, where an argument is carrying weight it has not earned, which sentence in a room changes the temperature and why. He is grateful for every year of it and would not give it back.
What nobody warned him about is that a habit of noticing does not switch off when the subject is himself.
So he stands there during a meeting, at a small distance behind his own eyes, watching a man participate. He observes his own responses arriving. He notes, with interest, that his throat tightened at a particular line, and he wonders what did that, and the wondering removes him one further step, and by the time he has an answer the moment has gone past.
He is not cold. He wants to be in it more than he wants almost anything, and that wanting is itself now something he observes.
Nine years of this. And the sentence he cannot get away from is that he may have made himself the one person in that room permanently unable to attend it.
If you have been watching yourself for years, come and sit at the table. That training of yours is not going to be run down here.

The examiner cannot be defeated by more examining
Let us name the loop, because he has been trying to solve it with the very thing that makes it, and that is why nine years have not moved it.
He has tried to think his way out. He has read on it. He has analyzed the analysis, which produced a third position further back still, and each attempt to catch the observer has only ever installed another observer behind the one he was reaching for.
That is not a spiritual failure and it is not a character defect. It is a structural feature of attention: whatever looks cannot be looked at from where it is standing. The loop does not close from the inside, and no amount of effort applied at that end has ever closed it for anybody.
You have not disqualified yourself from that room. Nothing about a mind trained to notice has ever put you outside what God does in a meeting. I am not saying it to console a clever man. Scripture says be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10), which is an instruction to stop rather than an instruction to work something out, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a man standing behind his own eyes.
The instruction is to stop, and the knowing follows
Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off anybody's mind or training.
Read the order of the two clauses, because the order is the entire content.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.Psalm 46:10
Be still first. Know second. That is not the sequence a trained mind would choose, and it is not negotiable in the sentence: the stillness is not the reward for having understood, it is the condition under which the knowing arrives.
And the word is not think, or examine, or verify. It is a word about ceasing, spoken into a psalm full of noise and collapsing mountains, and the ceasing is the only thing being asked.
You are asked to cease rather than to solve, and Scripture puts the stillness before the knowing rather than after it. That is written into the order of the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a man nine years into a loop.
Nothing here is against the trained mind
Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page telling a careful man that carefulness was his sin.
His training is a gift and it is not the problem. The ability to see what a text is doing has served people around him for years, and rooms with nobody like him in them go wrong in ways he could name. Precision is not the enemy of anything on this page.
And nothing here suggests that the people in that room who are wholly absorbed, who never observe themselves once in ninety minutes, are further along than he is. They are not. There is no ladder with the unreflective at the top of it, and a man who thinks is not a man who is holding back.
What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where the giving is not conditioned on a particular quality of attention, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a man's success at getting out of his own way, who does the work in a meeting.
And if these nine years have cost more than the friends at that table know, if sleep has gone, if the meetings have started to frighten you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about how the next meeting feels.
What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10), where the ceasing comes first and the knowing follows it, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a man's success at outmaneuvering his own attention, who brings a person into a room.
I cannot tell you when the loop opens, or whether you notice it when it does. Nobody honest would, and the noticing is the thing you would most want to be spared. What I can tell you is that nine years of wanting to be in it is not the record of a cold man, and that the examiner was never posted there by God.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.
- Examiner I have kept on duty inside my own head, you are a trained habit and you are not a post God assigned me. Psalm 46 says be still and know, in that order, so the stillness is the condition and never the reward for having worked it out, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked me to solve my way in. In the name of Jesus I stand you down.
- Verdict that I am the one man unable to attend that room, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting six rows back on Thursday. First Corinthians 12 attaches no quality of attention to the giving, so a trained mind was never a disqualification, and His Spirit does the work in that meeting. I have nothing to prove in that room.
- Father, be still, and know that I am God, and Psalm 46 says it into a page full of noise and collapsing mountains. I thank You for years of training that taught me to see, and for nine years of wanting to be in it, and Your Spirit has held the whole thing without my certifying it. What He gave me is not a demonstration.
