Nothing To Demonstrate1 Corinthians 13:1

Nothing Prepared for the Room

This message is for I go into that monthly gathering feeling responsible for producing the memorable moment, and I have started arriving with something ready in case the evening needs rescuing

There is a note in his phone, and he wrote it on a Tuesday about three years ago, and he has edited it perhaps forty times since.

It is four sentences. It is a good four sentences, and if he said them in that room on the right evening, at the right point, something would happen and everybody would go home glad.

He has never used it. That is the odd part. He has carried it into every monthly gathering for three years and never once said it, and he has never fully admitted to himself why he keeps it there.

The reason is that he is holding the evening. Somewhere in the second year of that gathering he decided, without deciding, that if a meeting goes flat it is his to rescue, and a man who is going to rescue a meeting needs something in his pocket.

So he arrives now with a note and a job, and he spends the first forty minutes taking the temperature of a room instead of being in it.

If you carry something in case, come and sit at the table. Nothing about that gathering or one person in it is going to be criticized here.

Nothing Prepared for the Room

The job was never issued

Let us look at how he came by that responsibility, because nobody handed it to him and it has cost him three years of evenings.

He is capable. That is where it starts, and it is not a fault. He can read a room, he has something real, and when he does say a thing it usually lands. Over time that turned into an expectation he holds about himself, and expectations a person holds about themselves do not need a single other person to agree in order to become binding.

Nobody in that gathering thinks the evening is his. If he asked them, every one of them would be surprised, and one or two would be sad that he has been carrying it.

You are not responsible for that evening. Nothing you can do well has ever obliged you to keep a room from going flat. I am not saying it to relieve a man of an obligation. Scripture says though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass (1 Corinthians 13:1), which puts a magnificent contribution and an empty one in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a man taking the temperature of a room.

Magnificent and empty in one sentence

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off one person in that gathering.

Read what Paul is willing to describe as sounding brass, because it is not a poor contribution.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.1 Corinthians 13:1

Tongues of men and of angels. He picks the highest thing available, deliberately, and then puts it next to a noise, and the hinge is not quality. The four sentences in that note would be admirable and would land, and none of that is what the chapter is weighing.

Which cuts the ground out from under the whole arrangement. If a magnificent contribution can be brass, then a rescued evening was never the measure, and a flat one was never a failure.

You are not measured by what you produce in that room, and Scripture puts the highest possible contribution beside a noise. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a man with a note in his phone.

Nothing here is against that room

Something must be said plainly, or this becomes a page about a gathering that has been leaning on him.

They have not. Nobody there has asked him for anything, the people who contribute are not performing, and the ones who are quiet are not withholding. Three years of that gathering has not been three years of a room waiting to be carried.

And nothing here says he should say less. If the four sentences are true and the moment is right, he should say them, and holding back on principle would be the same job worn inside out.

What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where the giving is spread across the room rather than concentrated in the capable man, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a note in a pocket, who determines what an evening holds.

And if these three years have cost more than the friends at that table know, if sleep has gone, if the monthly gathering has started to weigh on you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not going around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about what happens at the next one.

What He gave you is not a demonstration. You have nothing to prove in that room. Scripture puts the tongues of men and of angels beside sounding brass in one sentence (1 Corinthians 13:1), where the weighing is not on the quality of the contribution at all, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a capable man with something ready, who holds an evening.

I cannot tell you what happens in that room next month, or whether it goes flat. Nobody honest would. What I can tell you is that a flat evening has never been a failure of yours, and that three years of taking the temperature is three years of not being in the room.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Thing I keep ready in my pocket, you are a job I gave myself and you are not a charge God laid on me. First Corinthians 13 puts the tongues of men and of angels beside sounding brass in one sentence, so quality was never what was being weighed, and the Holy Spirit never once made me the keeper of a room. In the name of Jesus I put you down.
  2. Habit of taking the room's temperature, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting at that gathering next month. First Corinthians 12 spreads the giving across the room rather than concentrating it in the capable man, so the evening was never mine to hold, and His Spirit determines what it holds. I have nothing to prove in that room.
  3. Father, First Corinthians 13 says that though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am sounding brass, and You chose the highest possible thing to say it about. I thank You for a room of people who have never once asked me to carry an evening and would be sad to learn that I have, and Your Spirit was never waiting on a performance from me. What He gave me is not a demonstration.
