She grew up in a house where you would know. That was the whole of it, said in those words, from before she could read.
You would know because you would hear it. There was a sound attached to the thing, and the sound was how a person could be certain, and her grandmother could name the hour it had come to her and had named it at every family gathering for thirty years. It was not superstition in that house. It was the plainest fact anybody had.
What came to her came without a sound.
She was nineteen. She has never doubted that something happened, and she could not tell you why she is so sure, only that she walked out of that week a different person and stayed different. But there was no sound in it anywhere, and by the only test she had been handed, she was still waiting.
She is thirty six now and she is still, technically, waiting. She has never said so. In her family that sentence would start a prayer meeting, and she does not want a prayer meeting. She wants to know whether she has been carrying something for seventeen years or carrying nothing.
If you were raised to listen for something and it never came, come and sit down. Nothing your people believe is going to be argued with here.

What this page will not do
Let me be honest with you about the shape of this, because you will feel it coming and I would rather say it first.
Your house holds a position on what the sign is and when it is required. That position is held sincerely by people who love God and who love you, and it has been argued about by better readers than me for longer than either of us has been alive. This page is not going to settle it, and I am not going to lean on the scale while pretending I am doing something else.
What I can do is put one thing beside it that does not depend on how that question comes out.
You have not been carrying nothing for seventeen years. Nothing a silence failed to include has ever been the whole record of what God has done in you. I am not saying that to work around your grandmother. Scripture says in returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength (Isaiah 30:15), which puts quiet on the side of the strength rather than the side of the lack, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that hold in a woman who has been waiting since she was nineteen.
Certainty that arrived without a route
Here is the part I keep returning to, and it questions nothing your grandmother has told that room.
You said you have never doubted that something happened, and that you cannot tell anybody why you are so sure, and the Holy Spirit has held that certainty upright for seventeen years with nothing propped under it.
Thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.Isaiah 30:15
Confidence. It is named as a state a person is in, and it is set right beside quietness, in the same clause, as though the two belong together instead of contradicting each other.
That is worth stopping on, because seventeen years of unexplained certainty is not a small piece of evidence. It is simply not the piece you were trained to look for, so it has never been counted.
You were given something you can still feel the weight of, and Scripture names quietness and confidence in one breath. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a certainty standing for seventeen years without a single thing to prop it up.
Nothing here is against your grandmother
Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page that quietly sets a woman against her own family.
Her grandmother is not a fool and was not exaggerating. She named an hour because she had one. What happened to her was real, it was God, and thirty years of telling it at family gatherings is thirty years of a woman being faithful to the best thing that ever happened to her.
The relief is not that the older woman was wrong.
You have something of your own to count, and counting it takes nothing off one hour your grandmother has named. Scripture says there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord (1 Corinthians 12:5), where difference and sameness stand together and neither is treated as a defect, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a household test, who assigns what goes where.
And if these seventeen years have cost more than anybody in that front room knows, if sleep has gone, if the family gatherings have started to frighten you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is the turn, and it is not a prediction that a sound is coming.
What He gave you was quiet and it was real. Yours does not have to look like theirs. The written word says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Corinthians 12:7), where every man is stated without a hearing test attached, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the house you grew up in, who sets the form of what He gives.
I cannot tell you whether a sound ever comes, and I am not going to guess at it, and I am not going to tell you what to conclude about the question your family has settled. What I can tell you is that a certainty you have carried for seventeen years without being able to explain it is not nothing, and has never once been nothing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.
- Silence where I was taught to expect a sound, you are a fact about my hearing and you are not a report on what God gave me. Isaiah 30 sets quietness and confidence in the same clause as strength, so quiet was never filed under lack, and the Holy Spirit has held me steady in it since I was nineteen. In the name of Jesus I take you off the test.
- Verdict that I have carried nothing, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting in this front room tonight. First Corinthians 12 says there are differences of administrations but the same Lord, so the difference was never once the defect, and His Spirit assigned what went where. I am counting what is actually mine.
- Father, the manifestation of Your Spirit is given to every man to profit withal, and First Corinthians 12 attaches no hearing test to that word. I thank You that You met my grandmother at an hour she can name and met me in a silence I cannot explain, out of one hand. What He gave me was quiet and it was real.
