Nothing Spilled From the Cup

She was holding a paper cup of tea, and it was full, and at the end of it the tea was still in the cup and still warm.

That is what she has instead of a story. Around her, in that room, things were visibly happening. Somebody was on the floor. Two people were shaking in a way that was not put on. There was noise, real noise, and it went on for a long time.

And what came to her was that everything went quiet. Not the room. Her. Something settled all the way down and stayed settled, and she stood in the middle of it with both hands round a paper cup, and she did not move for about four minutes.

Six years ago. She has never described it to anybody, because the description does not sound like anything. A woman stood still and did not spill her tea.

By the only measure that room offered, nothing happened to her at all. She has half believed that ever since, and half believed the opposite, and has never been able to settle which.

If yours arrived as quiet in a loud room, come and sit in the shade. Nothing anybody else did in that room is going to be doubted here.

The room supplied the measure

Let us look at where her doubt actually comes from, because it did not come from what happened to her.

It came from the measure available at the time. She was in a room where the visible was the evidence, and she was not, and so the comparison ran automatically and produced a result about her.

But she has never once applied that measure to anybody else. If a friend told her exactly what she experienced, she would not hesitate for a second about it. She reserves the doubt for her own case, which is what most people do and is not a form of humility.

You were not passed over. Nothing about a cup that stayed full has ever been a measurement of what God did in you. I am not saying it to console a woman with no story. Scripture says and after the fire a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12), which sets the arrival deliberately after the loud things and not in them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in a woman six years on.

The order of that passage is the argument

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it doubts nothing anybody in that room experienced.

Read what the passage does with the wind, the earthquake and the fire, because it does not deny that any of them happened.

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.1 Kings 19:12

They all occurred. The account is not saying the wind was staged, or that the earthquake was an exaggeration. Large visible things happened, in order, and they are reported as real.

And then, after them, a still small voice. Which is where the conversation actually takes place, and which arrives in a form that nobody standing outside that cave would have registered at all.

You may have been met in the quiet without anything in the room being untrue, and Scripture reports the loud things and the voice in one passage. That is written into the order of the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it to a woman with a paper cup.

Nothing here says quiet is better

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page that quietly promotes her by demoting everybody else in that room.

The shaking was not put on. The noise was not manufactured, the woman on the floor was not performing, and six years of remembering that room is not six years of remembering a show. Whatever came to them came to them, and this page has no standing to grade it.

And a still small voice is not the superior category. It is a category. The same chapter has fire in it and the fire is not apologized for.

What He gave you was quiet and it was real. Yours does not have to look like theirs. Scripture says all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will (1 Corinthians 12:11), where the variety is traced to one hand making decisions rather than to a ladder, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not the visibility of a thing, who determines its form.

And if these six years have cost more than the friends at that table know, if sleep has gone, if the memory has started to trouble you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
