Still Warm HerePsalm 78:4

I Was Seven And I Remember It Like A Child

This message is for I was seven when it was happening and what I have is a child's memory of it, and I cannot tell how much is mine and how much I assembled later from what the adults said

What he has is this: the smell of the carpet, somebody's coat over the back of a chair, and his mother crying in a way he had never seen and was not frightened by.

He was seven. Those three things are the whole of his direct evidence for the most significant period in the life of the community that raised him.

Everything else he knows he was told. He knows the year it started and the year it thinned out, he knows the names, he knows about the Wednesday nights, and every one of those facts arrived in his ears afterward from adults who were there. Over thirty years the told parts and the remembered parts have grown into each other, and he can no longer find the seam.

So when he asks for it, and he does ask, there is a question underneath the asking that he cannot get rid of. He is asking on the strength of something he cannot verify. He might be asking for a carpet and a coat and a woman crying, arranged into a season by other people's sentences.

If your memory of it is a child's, come and sit under the vines. Not one of the adults who told you is going to be criticized here.

I Was Seven And I Remember It Like A Child

Being told is how it was always meant to travel

Let us look at the standard he is holding his own memory to, because it is a standard the thing was never designed to meet.

He wants firsthand evidence, independently verified, uncontaminated by testimony. That is a good instinct in some fields and it is not how any of this has ever moved between generations. Almost everything anybody knows about what God has done reached them because somebody said it out loud to somebody younger.

His mother crying is not corroboration for the account. It is his own small piece of the thing, and the account is what the people who were adults have carried to him on purpose, and the two are not in competition.

You are not asking on the strength of nothing. Nothing about a memory you cannot separate from the telling has ever made what you are asking for imaginary. I am not saying it to shore up a shaky foundation. Scripture says shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done (Psalm 78:4), which makes the telling the designed route, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a man at a long table.

The telling is the appointed channel

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off anybody who told you.

Read what that psalm treats as the normal way this material travels, because it is not what a careful man would prefer.

We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.Psalm 78:4

Shewing to the generation to come. The whole psalm is built around the deliberate transmission of an account to people who were not there, and it treats that as the appointed method rather than as a regrettable second best.

Which means a man who received most of it by being told has received it the way the book expects. He is not working from a degraded copy. He is standing exactly where that psalm puts the next generation.

You received it by the appointed route, and Scripture makes the telling the design rather than the fallback. That is written into the psalm itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a man who remembers a carpet.

Nobody who told you is being doubted

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page questioning the honesty of a whole generation of adults.

They were not embellishing. People who have been through something like that are usually more careful with it rather than less, and the ones who told him did so in small pieces over thirty years, unprompted, in kitchens, and never once as a performance.

And nothing here suggests he should be looking for a livelier room. This is his building and these are his people, and there is no sentence on this page nudging him anywhere else.

You are asking for this again, here. The fire that stayed is the one you want, not the one you remember. Scripture says how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him (Luke 11:13), where the asking is what is named and no verified memory is required to make it, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a reconstructed childhood, who is being asked for.

And if this has cost more than the family at that table know, if sleep has gone, if the asking has started to frighten you, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise that anything comes, or when.

You are asking for this again, here. The fire that stayed is the one you want, not the one you remember. Scripture makes the telling to the next generation the appointed route (Psalm 78:4), and it is the Holy Spirit, not a childhood memory you can separate cleanly from what you were told, who is the object of the asking.

I cannot tell you what happens in that building, or when, and I am not going to guess. Nobody honest would. What I can tell you is that the carpet and the coat and your mother's face are yours, and that everything else reached you the way this material has always reached anybody.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Doubt about how much of that memory is mine, you are a question about a seven year old and you are not a barrier to what I am asking for now. Psalm 78 makes the shewing to the generation to come the appointed route rather than a second best, and the Holy Spirit designed it to travel by telling. In the name of Jesus I stop auditing my own childhood.
  2. Standard of proof that this was never built to meet, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting at this table tonight. Luke 11 attaches no verified memory to the asking it names, so nothing has to be established before I open my mouth, and His Spirit is the one being asked for. I am asking for this again, here.
  3. Father, we will not hide them from their children, and Psalm 78 puts the whole account deliberately into the hands of people who were not there. I thank You for the adults who told me in kitchens, in small pieces, over thirty years, and never once as a performance, and Your Spirit has stayed in that room through all the quiet years. The fire that stayed is the one I want, not the one I remember.
