Still Warm HereDeuteronomy 5:3

I Arrived Four Years After It Ended

This message is for I came to that church four years after it ended, and for eleven years I have listened to people describe a room I have never been in, and I have been quietly furious about it

Four years. That is the whole of it, and she has done the arithmetic more times than she would like to admit.

She walked into that building in the spring, knowing nobody, at a bad point in her life, and they were kind to her from the first Sunday and have been kind to her ever since. She has been there eleven years. She would not be anywhere else.

And every so often, in a conversation that is not about her, somebody says the phrase. Back when it was happening. And the room does a small thing, and everybody who was there is briefly in a place together, and she is standing in the same room and is not in that place.

She has never said anything. What would she say? It is nobody's fault. Nobody is excluding her. It is a date.

But she is angry. She has been angry for about a decade, in a low, well managed, entirely private way, and the thing she is angry about is a calendar, which is not a thing a person can be angry at, and so it has had nowhere to go and has just sat in her.

If you arrived after, come and walk a bit. Not one person in that building is going to be criticized here.

I Arrived Four Years After It Ended

The anger is honest and it is aimed at nothing

Let us look at what she has been carrying, because she has never let herself name it and unnamed things do not improve.

She is angry that other people were given something she was not, on the basis of when they happened to walk through a door. That is not envy of a person, which is why she cannot find anyone to be angry with. It is a grievance against a timetable.

And it has been made worse by her own decency: because there is no villain, she has concluded there is no injury, and has therefore never allowed herself the grief that would have let it move.

You are not a latecomer to God. Nothing about the date you walked in has ever placed you behind anybody in that room. I am not saying it to soothe a decade of quiet fury. Scripture says the LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day (Deuteronomy 5:3), which is said to a generation that missed the mountain, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a woman on a lane in the evening.

Spoken to the ones who were not there

Here is the part that turned this for me, and it takes nothing off anybody who was.

Read who Moses is talking to, because almost everybody in front of him had missed the event he is describing.

The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.Deuteronomy 5:3

Not with our fathers. He is standing in front of a generation who were children or unborn when it happened at the mountain, and who had spent forty years hearing about a day they had no access to.

And he says the covenant is with us, even us, and then adds all of us here alive this day, which is a phrase about presence rather than about history. The qualification is being alive and standing there. It is not having been at the event.

You are inside the covenant on the basis of being present rather than of having been early, and Scripture says it to a generation that missed it. That is written into the verse itself, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it to a woman eleven years in.

Nobody in that room is being blamed

Something must be said very plainly, or this becomes a page about people who cannot stop mentioning a good decade.

They are not rubbing her nose in it. The phrase comes up rarely, it comes up sideways, and the small thing the room does is not exclusion, it is what happens when several people remember the same weather. They would be horrified to learn that she counts the seconds of it.

And nothing here nudges her toward a building with a livelier past or a livelier present. This is her church, these are her people, and eleven years of kindness is not a consolation prize.

You are asking for this again, here. The fire that stayed is the one you want, not the one you remember. Scripture says how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him (Luke 11:13), where the asking belongs to whoever is present to make it, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not a four year gap in a calendar, who determines what anybody receives.

And if this decade has cost more than the friends on that lane know, if sleep has gone, if the phrase has started to hurt in a way you cannot explain, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promise that anything comes to that building, or when.

You are asking for this again, here. The fire that stayed is the one you want, not the one you remember. Scripture says the covenant is with us, even us, all of us here alive this day (Deuteronomy 5:3), where presence rather than history is the qualification, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the year you happened to arrive, who determines what you may ask for.

I cannot tell you whether you ever get a decade of your own, and I am not going to guess at it. Nobody honest would. What I can tell you is that you have been angry at a calendar for ten years with nowhere to put it, and that the anger was honest even though it had no defendant.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than your own. You speak under His will and not yours, and what God does next, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Four years I missed it by, you are an accident of when I walked in and you are not a ranking God has made. Deuteronomy 5 says the covenant was made not with our fathers but with us, even us, all of us here alive this day, spoken to a generation that missed the mountain, and the Holy Spirit made presence the qualification. In the name of Jesus I take you off my standing.
  2. Decade of anger with nowhere to go, you are not what God says about me and you are not walking this lane with me tomorrow. Luke 11 gives the asking to whoever is present to make it, so a calendar was never a ranking, and His Spirit determines what anybody receives. I am asking for this again, here.
  3. Father, You made this covenant with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day, and Deuteronomy 5 says it to people who were children or unborn. I thank You for eleven years of a congregation that has been kind to me since the first Sunday, and Your Spirit is present in the room as it actually is. The fire that stayed is the one I want, not the one I remember.
