The Friend Who Said I Was In The Wrong Building

This message is for being told by somebody who loves me that what happened to me means I am in the wrong church, and not being able to make that sentence sit right

Her friend was not being unkind and that is what has made it so difficult to put down.

She told her about it over coffee, carefully, the way a person tells somebody a thing they have not said out loud before. And her friend listened properly, and was glad, and was genuinely moved, and then said the sentence: you know what this means, don't you. You are in the wrong place.

It was said with love. It was said by somebody who has known her nineteen years and would not hurt her for anything.

And it will not sit right, and she has not been able to work out why, because every individual part of her friend's reasoning is sound and the conclusion still lands wrong in her chest.

So she has spent four months in an argument she cannot win with somebody she is not arguing with. She sits in the same seat every Sunday and hears that sentence during the second hymn.

If somebody drew a conclusion for you, come and sit at this table. Your friend is not going to be criticized here, and neither is your church.

The Friend Who Said I Was In The Wrong Building

The experience and the conclusion are two objects

Let us take them apart, because four months of carrying them fused is what has made this so heavy.

What happened to you is one thing. It is an event, it has a date, and it came from God. What your friend said about what it implies is a second and completely separate thing: an interpretation, offered by a person who was not there, out of her own history and her own instincts about how these things usually go.

Both were handed over in the same conversation, and they arrived stuck together, and they have stayed stuck.

They come apart. You can keep every bit of the first and set the second down without insulting anybody.

You are not obliged to accept somebody's reading of what God did to you. Nothing your friend said has ever been part of the gift itself. I am not saying that to set you against her. The written word says God hath set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him (1 Corinthians 12:18), where the placing is God's own act and no third party is consulted in the verse, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that into a woman hearing a sentence during the second hymn.

Where Scripture puts the deciding

Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a case against your friend's opinion.

Read the verse slowly, because the little phrase at the end is doing the whole job.

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18

As it hath pleased Him. That is the reason given for where each person is, and it is the only reason given. Not as it suited the member. Not as the rest of the body assessed the fit. His pleasure, His placing, and the sentence closes there without an appeals process.

And notice that the whole passage exists because people in that congregation were busy deciding who belonged where. Paul's answer is not to referee the individual cases. It is to say that the placing was never theirs to do.

You are somewhere God put you, and Scripture makes that a settled act rather than an open question for the room. That is written with the reason attached, and the Holy Spirit brings it to bear on a woman four months into an argument nobody is having with her.

This page is not overruling her either

Something has to be said very plainly here, or this becomes exactly the thing it is objecting to.

Nothing in this article says your friend is wrong about your situation. She might be right. She knows you and she was there for nineteen years of your life and this page has met you for six minutes.

What is being said is only that her sentence is not the meaning of the event, and that no page and no friend gets to hand you a verdict about a building.

You are free to decide nothing today, and the deciding is not the price of keeping what you were given. Scripture says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind (Romans 14:5), which puts a slow and personal settling exactly where a quick external ruling wants to go, and the Holy Spirit holds that steady over a woman who does not have to answer anybody this week.

And if these four months have cost more than anybody around you knows, if sleep has gone, if the Sundays have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a ruling about where you sit.

He did this to you here. You can be renewed in the room you are already in, and you do not have to go. The written word says that there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4), which puts one Giver behind wildly different rooms and never sorts them into right and wrong ones, and it is the Holy Spirit, not anybody's reading, who makes that live in the building you will be in on Sunday.

I cannot tell you what you should do about your church, and I am not going to try. Nobody honest would from here. What I can tell you is that the event and the interpretation arrived stuck together and they were never one object, and that Scripture puts the placing in God's hands and closes the sentence there.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing under these words is His rather than anybody's opinion. You speak under His will and not your own, and where God has you, and when, is His to decide, however He answers.

  1. Conclusion somebody drew for me over coffee, you are one person's reading and you are not the meaning of what God did. First Corinthians 12 says God has set the members every one of them in the body as it has pleased Him, and the Holy Spirit consulted nobody in that verse. In the name of Jesus I take you out of the second hymn.
  2. Four months of an argument nobody is having with me, you are not what God says about me and you are not sitting at this table tomorrow. Romans 14 says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, which puts a slow personal settling exactly where a quick ruling wants to go, and His Spirit is unhurried about it. I am deciding nothing this week and keeping everything I was given.
  3. Father, there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit, and First Corinthians 12 puts one Giver behind wildly different rooms. I thank You that Your Spirit never once sorted those rooms into the right ones and the wrong ones. He did this to me here, and here is the seat I am sitting in.
